Column: “GOD & PLANS & BEARS (OH MY!)”
When your name is Bayer and you reach puberty before all the other kids and have a great deal more hair than them, your nickname quickly becomes “The Bear.” I was reminded of my bear karma one day outside my home in Woodstock, N. Y. I was also reminded of the quip over my desk: “If you want to make God laugh, talk about your plans.”
My plans were to go to the post office for the weekly shipments of my books, tapes and booklets to bookstores and individuals. I had 30 minutes between coaching sessions, enough time, according to my carefully-designed plans. Until a bear print stepped into my date book.
During the night, my trash cans, intended for sanitation pickup, were confiscated by a bear. (A holiday the day before moved the schedule back a day, to the two-legged Bear’s surprise and the four-legged bear’s delight.) About to turn out of my driveway, I spotted my trash in the middle of the country road blocking both traffic and my trip to town. I followed the trail, and discovered the answer to the koan: why did the bear cross the road? To eat my garbage. As I started putting his leftovers into a new bag, I chuckled because I knew God was laughing about my plan. The bear might have been laughing, too, had he not been busy digesting leftover lunches and credit card offers from American Express.
So there I was, rifling through garbage on the property of Levon Helm, drummer of the great 60’s rockers, The Band, who played at the Woodstock Festival which, as a youth, I feasted on. I looked like A.J. Weberman, the infamous “garbologist” who poured through Bob Dylan’s trash to discover—who knows?–his preference in milk and cookies. (Seinfeld-like connections dawned: the Band was Dylan’s back-up before they became stars, and Dylan’s former manager once owned property in the next town–Bearsville.)
So when you take a peek at your schedule, make certain there’s room in between things on your to-do list. God and bears have a way of laughing at your plans.

Referral Fees
When I ran my own marketing/PR firm, I loved thanking anyone who referred a new client to me, by sending a check for 10 percent of the fees generated. I have a similar policy as a life coach, a meditation teacher, and the writer of books for others. If you inspire someone to become a client of mine for coaching or book writing, or a meditation student, you’ll receive 10 percent of the fee that that person begins with me at. That could easily mean a check for you of $140 or $85 for coaching, and for $50 for meditation. It’s my way of saying, “thanks.” My thought is simple–who couldn’t use a piece of unexpected income?
