Higher Self Healing Meditation

I’m proud to announce the development of a new meditation training that’s been marinating in the quietest levels of consciousness deep within my soul for a number of years.  Its name is Higher Self Healing Meditation, and it’s as effortless as Transcendental Meditation (TM) that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi trained me to teach when I was 20 years old.

Some years back, the movement that teaches the late Maharishi’s system of TM significantly changed the requirements for those who had been teaching to continue to do so. As a result, thousands of others, including myself, no longer instruct that method. But understanding the mechanics of how the mind transcends in meditation after teaching meditation to so many hundreds of people from southern California and Western Europe to the Caribbean and many points in between–as well as training dozens of teachers of Transcendental Meditation–I’ve developed a system of meditation that’s as effective as TM, as easy as TM, and available at one third the price that it costs to learn TM.

Referral Fees

When I ran my own marketing/PR firm, I loved thanking anyone who referred a new client to me, by sending a check for 10 percent of the fees generated. I have a similar policy as a life coach, a meditation teacher, and the writer of books for others. If you inspire someone to become a client of mine for coaching or book writing, or a meditation student, you’ll receive 10 percent of the fee that that person begins with me at. That could easily mean a check for you of $105 or $65 for coaching, for $50 for meditation, and hundreds of dollars for book publishing. It’s my way of saying, “thanks.” My thought is simple–who couldn’t use a piece of unexpected income?

Advanced Meditation Technique Available

The basic course in Higher Self Healing Meditation is easy to learn and even easier to practice; so, too, are advanced techniques, which you can learn, that accelerate your practice. The second technique, for example, expands the benefits of your daily meditation by opening awareness to the most refined levels of inner silence. Think of it as a fertilizer to speed up your growth. This second technique also improves the mind’s ability to cognize thought at more refined levels so that action can be strengthened, increasing your ability to achieve your goals, and thereby grow in fulfillment. This happens naturally and leads to improvements in all areas of life–physical, mental, and spiritual.

Meditation Retreats

A number of meditators have expressed interest in deepening their experience with meditation. Product Profile: Beatles Yoga

Deep wisdom from 11 Beatles songs are elucidated in much the same manner that commentators interpret spiritual literature like the Bible or the Bhagavad Gita, examining every word, in the verses. Some of the songs looked at are “Across the Universe,” “Within You, Without You,” and “The Inner Light,” among others.

Wise Guy/Wise Man Jim Carrey

Among the most enlightening graduation addresses I’ve heard was Jim Carrey’s at Maharishi University of Management. Having received my Masters degree from this bastion of higher learning that awakens your higher Self, I proudly share its highlights. Below is a link to the entire video and its transcription.

The comedian/mystic says:
 “I thought Jim Carrey is all that I was… The great nothing masquerading as something you can name. You didn’t think I could be serious did ya’? I don’t think you understand who you’re dealing with! I have no limits! I cannot be contained because I’m the container.”

He then fuses spirituality with laughter:
 “I believed I ended at the edge of my skin…(in) this little vehicle called a body to experience creation, and though I couldn’t have asked for a sportier model, it was after all a loaner and would have to be returned.”

Those familiar with affirmations recognize Carrey’s seriousness and comedy:

 “Many people choose their path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect, so we dare not ask the universe for it…I’m proof you can ask for it!…If it doesn’t happen right away, it’s because the universe is busy fulfilling my order. It’s party size!”

He discourages livelihoods to tolerate for lovelihoods to adore.

“My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that was possible…Instead, he (became) an accountant. (until) he was let go from that safe job…I learned great lessons from him…that you can fail at what you don’t want, so take a chance doing what you love…I watched the affect his love and humor had on the world, and I thought, ‘That’s something…worth my time.'”

Here’s a portrait of the comic as a young boy…

“People would come to my house and they’d be greeted by a 7 year-old throwing himself down a flight of stairs. They’d say, ‘What happened?’ And I’d say, ‘I don’t know – let’s check the replay.’ And I’d go back to the top and come back down in slow motion.”

…and young man:

“My father bragged that I wasn’t a ham – I was the whole pig. He treated my talent as his second chance…After a decade as a comedian, I realized…. the purpose of my life had always been to free people from concern…I dubbed my new devotion, The Church of Freedom From Concern-and dedicated myself to that ministry.”

Doing his dharma (calling) helped Carrey command eight-figure deals, but then there’s spirituality…

“My choosing to free people from concern got me to the top of a mountain. … (but) the only one I hadn’t freed was myself and that’s when my search for identity deepened.”

He applauds those who’ve applauded him.

“But you…already know who you are and that peace that we’re after, lies beyond personality… Risk being seen in all your glory…You’re not the pictures on the film stock, you’re the light that shines through it.”

He encourages tapping the Source of success.

“If people could realize their dreams of wealth and fame they’d see that it’s not completion…I went into the world to do something bigger than myself, until someone smarter than myself made me realize there is nothing bigger than myself!”

The comic/mystic speaks:

“My soul is not contained within the limits of my body. My body is contained within the limitlessness of my soul -one unified field of nothing dancing for no particular reason, except maybe to…entertain itself.”

Then addresses your ego which,

“will tell you that you cannot stop until you’ve left an indelible mark on the earth, until you’ve achieved immortality. How tricky is the ego that it would tempt us with the promise of something we already possess.”

The minister who teaches freedom from concern concludes:

“I just want you to relax-that’s my job-and dream up a good life! It’s about letting the universe know what you want and working toward it while letting go of how it might come to pass. Your job is not to figure out how it’s going to happen, but to open the door in your head and when the doors open in real life, just walk through….You’re ready and able to do beautiful things in this world.”

Advanced Meditation Technique Available

The basic course in Higher Self Healing Meditation is easy to learn and even easier to practice; so, too, are advanced techniques, which you can learn, that accelerate your practice. The second technique, for example, expands the benefits of your daily meditation by opening awareness to the most refined levels of inner silence. Think of it as a fertilizer to speed up your growth. This second technique also improves the mind’s ability to cognize thought at more refined levels so that action can be strengthened, increasing your ability to achieve your goals, and thereby grow in fulfillment. This happens naturally and leads to improvements in all areas of life–physical, mental, and spiritual.
Once you’ve practiced meditation for at least a year, you’re ready to learn your next technique. The cost for this advanced method is half of the cost of the first: $250. What’s more, it can also be learned via Skype and a webcam.

Meditation Retreats

A number of meditators have expressed interest in deepening their experience with meditation. Toward that end, I created a one-day retreat called

“A Retreat into Peace, an Advance in Knowledge.”

It provides a day of profound rest, renewal, and healing, in which you get a chance to take another big step toward Enlightenment. Instead of your usual twice-a-day daily meditations, you’ll get to meditate and rest for four hours in a safe and appropriate environment. Column: Do you Gamble on your Happiness?

People gamble on lotteries, on slot machines, on football games.   Rarely, do you hear someone gamble on happiness. And yet, every day most people actually do gamble on their own happiness.

Most people derive happiness based on what happens that day. If they get a massage, a new client or a raise at work, or their child or grandchild gets a prize they’ll be happy. Conversely, if they lose at tennis, lose a client or a possible promotion at work, or their child or grandchild gets sick they’ll be unhappy. Said differently, their happiness is a function of what happens to them and those they care about. It’s outer-dependent and usually out of their control. Hence, my expression “gambling on their happiness.” Like a roulette wheel, if it shows up red they lose, if it shows up black they win. It’s a tough way to live.

The good news is that there’s a deeper happiness that’s inner-dependent, and even better news is that it’s possible to

A) connect to that happiness daily

B) to live from that state, as well.

Outer-dependent happiness comes about through the senses, your arms, legs and the rest of your body. Inner-dependent happiness doesn’t involve them, and arises when they’re completely at rest. The yogis of India call this inner happiness Ananda, Sanskrit for bliss. Ananda exists in abundance–infinite in fact–at the deepest level of your mind, where your individuality and your universality meet.

Meditation is the primary path to this concentrated happiness; the yogis of India call this brief experience of the inner Self Samadhi, which translates from the Sanskrit as “steady mind.” In other words, when the mind is steadiest, when it comes to rest and your conscious mind becomes consciousness, no longer aware of any thing in particular but awake within itself, Samadhi is achieved. Even the word “achieved” is a misnomer, because Samadhi isn’t something you can achieve like writing a book, cooking a meal, or even walking to the mailbox. It’s a state of Being, beyond the doing of your everyday actions, beyond the perceptions of your five senses, and beyond the thoughts of your thinking mind. It’s a fourth state of consciousness, as distinct from waking, dreaming, and sleeping, as each of them is from each other.
This is the knowledge elucidated by the yogis, and I can vouch for it from my own personal experience of having meditated since the age of 17 and taught Transcendental Meditation since three years after that until 2010 when I began teaching Higher Self Healing Meditation.
A fleeting experience of Samadhi that lasts for maybe a second or two or a minute or more brings a concentrated download of happiness into your mind. So when you come out of meditation your mind is infused with this happy state, making it so much easier to derive happiness out of the simplest things that you may see or do immediately afterwards. In an hour or so, almost all of that happiness fades out of consciousness; that’s not a bad thing, per se, it’s just the way of things. A little of it, however, still remains.

Regular exposure to the experience of Being within enables more and more of this precious bliss to habituate itself into the nature of your mind. Over the course of years of such exposure, the individual mind becomes saturated with that happiness; in fact, the mind comes to live in a state of happiness. The yogis of India have a name for this as well: Moksha, or liberation. In English, we call this Self-Realization, when you have come to identify yourself as both an individual being, who the world knows you as, and one with the Universal Being. This state of Enlightenment enables you to bring a truckload of happiness with you wherever you go and to whatever you do. This makes the activity of outer-dependent happiness, of course, much easier to achieve. In the Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz everyone wore green glasses, so that everything appeared to be green. When you wear happiness glasses, it’s awfully hard not to see happiness. Your gambling on happiness has ended.

Wise Guy/Wise Man Jim Carrey

Among the most enlightening graduation addresses I’ve heard was Jim Carrey’s at Maharishi University of Management. Having received my Masters degree from this bastion of higher learning that awakens your higher Self, I’m proud to share its highlights.
The comedian/mystic says:

“I thought Jim Carrey is all that I was… The great nothing masquerading as something you can name. You didn’t think I could be serious did ya’? I don’t think you understand who you’re dealing with! I have no limits! I cannot be contained because I’m the container.”
He then fuses spirituality with laughter:

“I believed I ended at the edge of my skin…(in) this little vehicle called a body to experience creation, and though I couldn’t have asked for a sportier model, it was after all a loaner and would have to be returned.”
Those familiar with affirmations recognize Carrey’s seriousness and comedy:

“Many people choose their path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect, so we dare not ask the universe for it…I’m proof you can ask for it!…If it doesn’t happen right away, it’s because the universe is busy fulfilling my order. It’s party size!”

He discourages livelihoods to tolerate for lovelihoods to adore.
“My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that was possible…Instead, he (became) an accountant. (until) he was let go from that safe job…I learned great lessons from him…that you can fail at what you don’t want, so take a chance doing what you love…I watched the affect his love and humor had on the world, and I thought, ‘That’s something…worth my time.'”

Here’s a portrait of the comic as a young boy…

“People would come to my house and they’d be greeted by a 7 year-old throwing himself down a flight of stairs. They’d say, ‘What happened?’ And I’d say, ‘I don’t know – let’s check the replay.’ And I’d go back to the top and come back down in slow motion.”

…and young man:

He treated my talent as his second chance…After a decade as a comedian, I realized…. the purpose of my life had always been to free people from concern…I dubbed my new devotion, The Church of Freedom From Concern–and dedicated myself to that ministry.”

Doing his dharma (calling) helped Carrey command eight-figure deals, but then there’s spirituality…
“My choosing to free people from concern got me to the top of a mountain. … (but) the only one I hadn’t freed was myself and that’s when my search for identity deepened.”

He applauds those who’ve applauded him.

“But you…already know who you are and that peace that we’re after, lies beyond personality… Risk being seen in all your glory…You’re not the pictures on the film stock, you’re the light that shines through it.”
He encourages tapping the Source of success.

“If people could realize their dreams of wealth and fame they’d see that it’s not completion…I went into the world to do something bigger than myself, until someone smarter than myself made me realize there is nothing bigger than myself!”

The comic/mystic speaks:

“My soul is not contained within the limits of my body. My body is contained within the limitlessness of my soul–one unified field of nothing dancing for no particular reason, except maybe to…entertain itself.”

Then addresses your ego which,

“will tell you that you cannot stop until you’ve left an indelible mark on the earth, until you’ve achieved immortality. How tricky is the ego that it would tempt us with the promise of something we already possess.”

The minister who teaches freedom from concern concludes:

“I just want you to relax–that’s my job–and dream up a good life! It’s about letting the universe know what you want and working toward it while letting go of how it might come to pass. Your job is not to figure out how it’s going to happen, but to open the door in your head and when the doors open in real life, just walk through….You’re ready and able to do beautiful things in this world.”

When I ran my own marketing/PR firm, I loved thanking anyone who referred a new client to me, by sending a check for 10 percent of the fees generated. I have a similar policy as a life coach, a meditation teacher, and the writer of books for others. Advanced Meditation Technique Available

The basic course in Higher Self Healing Meditation is easy to learn and even easier to practice; so, too, are advanced techniques, which you can learn, that accelerate your practice. The second technique, for example, expands the benefits of your daily meditation by opening awareness to the most refined levels of inner silence. Think of it as a fertilizer to speed up your growth. This second technique also improves the mind’s ability to cognize thought at more refined levels so that action can be strengthened, increasing your ability to achieve your goals, and thereby grow in fulfillment. This happens naturally and leads to improvements in all areas of life–physical, mental, and spiritual.
Once you’ve practiced meditation for at least a year, you’re ready to learn your next technique. The cost for this advanced method is half of the cost of the first: $250. What’s more, it can also be learned via Skype and a webcam.

Meditation Retreats

A number of meditators have expressed interest in deepening their experience with meditation. Toward that end, I created a one-day retreat called

“A Retreat into Peace, an Advance in Knowledge.”

It provides a day of profound rest, renewal, and healing, in which you get a chance to take another big step toward Enlightenment. Instead of your usual twice-a-day daily meditations, you’ll get to meditate and rest for four hours in a safe and appropriate environment. Column: Do you Gamble on your Happiness?

People gamble on lotteries, on slot machines, on football games.   Rarely, do you hear someone gamble on happiness. And yet, every day most people actually do gamble on their own happiness.

Most people derive happiness based on what happens that day. If they get a massage, a new client or a raise at work, or their child or grandchild gets a prize they’ll be happy. Conversely, if they lose at tennis, lose a client or a possible promotion at work, or their child or grandchild gets sick they’ll be unhappy. Said differently, their happiness is a function of what happens to them and those they care about. It’s outer-dependent and usually out of their control. Hence, my expression “gambling on their happiness.” Like a roulette wheel, if it shows up red they lose, if it shows up black they win. It’s a tough way to live.

The good news is that there’s a deeper happiness that’s inner-dependent, and even better news is that it’s possible to

A) connect to that happiness daily

B) to live from that state, as well.

Outer-dependent happiness comes about through the senses, your arms, legs and the rest of your body. Inner-dependent happiness doesn’t involve them, and arises when they’re completely at rest. The yogis of India call this inner happiness Ananda, Sanskrit for bliss. Ananda exists in abundance–infinite in fact–at the deepest level of your mind, where your individuality and your universality meet.

Meditation is the primary path to this concentrated happiness; the yogis of India call this brief experience of the inner Self Samadhi, which translates from the Sanskrit as “steady mind.” In other words, when the mind is steadiest, when it comes to rest and your conscious mind becomes consciousness, no longer aware of any thing in particular but awake within itself, Samadhi is achieved. Even the word “achieved” is a misnomer, because Samadhi isn’t something you can achieve like writing a book, cooking a meal, or even walking to the mailbox. It’s a state of Being, beyond the doing of your everyday actions, beyond the perceptions of your five senses, and beyond the thoughts of your thinking mind. It’s a fourth state of consciousness, as distinct from waking, dreaming, and sleeping, as each of them is from each other.
This is the knowledge elucidated by the yogis, and I can vouch for it from my own personal experience of having meditated since the age of 17 and taught Transcendental Meditation since three years after that until 2010 when I began teaching Higher Self Healing Meditation.
A fleeting experience of Samadhi that lasts for maybe a second or two or a minute or more brings a concentrated download of happiness into your mind. So when you come out of meditation your mind is infused with this happy state, making it so much easier to derive happiness out of the simplest things that you may see or do immediately afterwards. In an hour or so, almost all of that happiness fades out of consciousness; that’s not a bad thing, per se, it’s just the way of things. A little of it, however, still remains.

Regular exposure to the experience of Being within enables more and more of this precious bliss to habituate itself into the nature of your mind. Over the course of years of such exposure, the individual mind becomes saturated with that happiness; in fact, the mind comes to live in a state of happiness. The yogis of India have a name for this as well: Moksha, or liberation. In English, we call this Self-Realization, when you have come to identify yourself as both an individual being, who the world knows you as, and one with the Universal Being. This state of Enlightenment enables you to bring a truckload of happiness with you wherever you go and to whatever you do. This makes the activity of outer-dependent happiness, of course, much easier to achieve. In the Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz everyone wore green glasses, so that everything appeared to be green. When you wear happiness glasses, it’s awfully hard not to see happiness. Your gambling on happiness has ended.

In what seems like a previous lifetime I was a satirist: a columnist for the National Lampoon, a joke writer for a

Field of Dreams & The Field of All Possibilities

Every April, the eyes of baseball fans turn to their national pastime as hope springs eternal in their hearts. As they dream of pennant races, I slip a DVD into my DVR and watch Field of Dreams for the umpteenth April. To me, it’s the ultimate baseball and metaphysical movie.

When I was pursuing my Masters degree at Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa, its founder, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, spoke of his dream of creating Heaven on Earth. A few years later, W.P. Kinsella turned Iowa into Heaven–at least an Iowa farmland into Heaven for deceased baseball players–in his novel, Shoeless Joe. Director Phil Alden Robinson adapted it for the screenplay for Field of Dreams, making us laugh, cry, and imagine big thoughts of Eternity. He also avoided being corny, no mean feat when you’re surrounded by so much corn.

The film’s field of dreams is akin to the pure field of Creative Intelligence that Maharishi described as a field of all possibilities. Possibilities–at least of immortality for dead ballplayers–plays a central role in this film. The ball field was also a place for a novelist (J.D. Salinger in the book, the fictitious Terence Mann in the movie) to discover immortality, and maybe write about it after years of pain and publishing silence.

 “We’re dealing with primal forces of nature here,” Ray Kinsella (played so sincerely by Kevin Costner) tells his wife Annie. We’re dealing with the field from where all of Nature’s forces are structured, is how Maharishi would have put it. Ray quotes Mann to the novelist himself: “the universe opens itself up for a few seconds to show you what’s possible.” Those practicing Maharishi’s meditation, or the Higher Self Healing Meditation that I teach, have experienced that in the deepest part of their mind is the Transcendent field of pure potential which opens up for a few seconds in meditation to show them the Infinite, and what indeed is a possible state of consciousness to live from forever.

Meditating physicists have said that Maharishi’s field of Creative Intelligence sounds like the quantum field. Each is described as a field out of which all things manifest: baseball players in the film, and all of life in Maharishi’s teachings. In meditation, the meditator experiences that things (perceptions, thoughts, the mantra itself) also vanish into that field. In the film, ballplayers do the same into the cornfield beyond their field of dreams.

If You Build it He’ll Come

This is the message from a voice that Ray hears in the movie. In time he interprets it to mean build a baseball field. After he does, players come first to practice, and then to play full games like schoolboys on an endless summer day.

The movie is also about innocence, and the vision of eternity that comes to all those with a childlike spirit. Ray, his wife, and young daughter all see these baseball ghosts, but his commerce-obsessed brother-in-law is blind to them, and thinks Ray is a fool for mowing down a cornfield and its lucrative crop to build a baseball stadium that nobody uses. Mann convinces Ray not to sell the farm because people will have a desire to flock to this mystical baseball field, even though they don’t know why–to presumably find the answer to their dreams, as well.

Jesus said that we enter Heaven only when we become innocent, like children. Even Frank Sinatra sang, “Fairy tales can come true/They can happen to you/If you’re young at heart.” Former hippies and Berkeley grads, Ray and Annie are young at heart, and follow their dreams, and it leads to athletic immortality for the heroes of his fan’s heart, and reunion and completion with his own father.   The Voice told Ray that if he builds it he would come; all along we think that the he in question is Shoeless Joe Jackson, his father’s hero. Only at the end do we realize that it’s not just his father’s hero, but Ray’s late father himself who he was estranged from, who comes. By the tearful ending, Ray’s father has become his hero, as well.

Higher Self Healing Meditation

I’m proud to announce the development of a new meditation training that’s been

marinating in the quietest levels of consciousness deep within my soul for a number of years.  Its name is Higher Self Healing Meditation, and it’s as effortless as Transcendental Meditation (TM) that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi trained me to teach when I was 20 years old.

Free Advanced Monthly Meditation Webinar

The advanced meditation webinars, held for those who meditate, start with me opening the “floor” to questions about your meditation practice and/or understanding of the path of evolution of consciousness. Then, I’ll do a group meditation check. After that, I’ll direct you to a link for a talk by Maharishi, which each meditator can play on his or her computer. Lastly, I’ll take questions, and lead a discussion about the video.

Meditation Retreats

A number of meditators have expressed interest in deepening their experience with meditation. Toward that end, I created a one-day retreat called “A Retreat into Peace, an Advance in Knowledge.” It provides a day of profound rest, renewal, and healing, in which you get a chance to take another big step toward Enlightenment. Instead of your usual twice-a-day daily meditations, you’ll get to meditate and rest for four hours in a safe and appropriate environment. It’s enlightening to return to something you love. I had that pleasure at an exhibit at Manhattan’s South Street Seaport Museum that commemorated a century and a half of Walt Whitman’s poetry. Whitman presents the most expanded vision of any American poet; his consciousness was more spiritually developed than probably any other American writer.

I wrote a masters thesis called “Walt Whitman: Poet for an Enlightened Age,” when I was a graduate student/teaching assistant at Maharishi International University. If you didn’t realize that he’s a cosmic poet, allow me to share a Whitman sampler:

“Knowing the perfect fitness and equanimity of things, while they discuss I am silent, and go bathe and admire myself.”

“Who makes much of a miracle? To me every cubic inch of space is a miracle.”

The exhibit featured a pair of his boots. This reminded me of his depiction of higher consciousness in Song of Myself: “(I) am not contain’d between my hat and boots.”   I read his loving letters to the family of a dying Civil War soldier, whom he visited daily for months as a volunteer nurse. And I recalled his unforgettable line from Song of Myself: “I find letters from God dropt in the street, and every one is sign’d by God’s name.”

There was an audiotape of lines from his poem, “America,” read two years later by Whitman himself into Edison’s new phonograph machine. It was the only time I heard Whitman’s voice. This, and lines from his epic “Song of the Open Road,” brought me back to my cross country teaching trip when I listened to a tape of actors reading his poetry.

There were 150-year-old references to homosexuality. I was thrilled to see his words read by openly gay exhibit goers. To realize that the Supreme Court has made gay marriage legal was truly wonderful.

To see how a woman (Senator Hillary Clinton) nearly ran as the Democratic Party’s Presidential candidate, I realized how far ahead of his times Whitman was, advocating female equality. The exhibit omitted his transcendental poetry, incorporated above, that resemble India’s wisdom. That night, I practiced the Higher Self Healing Meditation that I teach, and my mind slipped into the transcendental Self that Whitman celebrated. I was lucky to regularly glimpse the cosmic insights that he wrote about so long ago.

The column below ran in syndication in a variety of wellness publications, including Arizona Together  in the past.

Groundhog Day & Reincarnation

As I write this piece, it’s February 2, Groundhog Day, and I’m doing what I’ve done for umpteenth Groundhog Days before this one–watching Harold Ramis’s comic spiritual masterpiece, Groundhog Day. What makes this comedy by the director of Caddyshack, National Lampoon’s Vacation, and Analyze This a spiritual film? The biggest reason: it’s a funny romantic metaphor for reincarnation. More on this later, but first the plot.         

Phil Connors, egocentric acerbic weatherman for a Pittsburgh television station, portrayed by uber wise guy Bill Murray, is transformed on Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, PA, where the annual event has been occurring for 130 years. Everyone experiences the festivities in one day but for him that day keeps on going many times over. It’s a Capra-esque/ Serling-esque picture–think It’s a Wonderful Life meets The Twilight Zone.

When Murray’s character wakes up on February 3, it’s still February 2 for everyone, but he soon knows exactly what will happen when it will happen because he keeps living the same day. For him there’s no tomorrow, just eternal February 2. He tells his producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) that he’s a god. She forgets this the following “day,” as does everyone else who forgets everything that he does.

Beyond Karma

He soon discovers that he can do anything he wants without facing lasting consequences; in other words, he’s transcended karma. So after the frustration of living the same day fades, he hedonistically indulges in sensual pleasures like gluttony, lust, and greed. After tiring of this, he falls into despair and attempts to kill himself many times, only to wake up the next day safely just where he was “the day before” at 6 AM with Sonny and Cher singing “I Got you Babe” on his clock radio alarm.

In time, he becomes attracted to his producer, who he previously dismissed for her apple pie view of life. He spends “day” after day learning what she loves to manipulate his chances at carnal pleasure. He learns piano and French, but all to no avail. On one date, she says, “It’s a perfect day. You couldn’t plan a day like this.” To which he replies, “Well, you can. It just takes an awful lot of work.”

As his love for her grows, his concern for humanity grows, as well. In “time,” with each new “incarnation,” he becomes a kind of saint-like hero, treating a homeless beggar who he knows will die that night to a bountiful lunch; he repeatedly saves a boy falling out of a tree; and performs Heimlich on a choking diner every “day.”

Reincarnation: Life as a Do-Over

Those who believe in reincarnation see it as a way in which the Universe offers a giant do-over. You can indulge any desire you choose, do anything you choose, and you’ll keep coming back to Earth in a new body, says this doctrine, until you discover the deeper meaning of existence. In other words, until you get it right. The “it” is the realization that you are, in fact, an undying eternal Spirit. The experience of this fact is known in spiritual circles as Enlightenment, Awakening, or Nirvana. It’s the release from the wheel of karma and the cycle of life after death after life that we call reincarnation.

In the case of Groundhog Day, Murray’s weatherman doesn’t actually gain Self-Knowledge, but he does learn true love, a Hollywood metaphor for the more sublime consciousness that the Buddha taught. The Murray character has a major shift in consciousness; what was once an arrogant know-it-all, firmly rooted in his ego, has softened to become someone who genuinely cares about everyone. He becomes the most beloved person in town. And he treats Rita like the Bodhisattvas of Buddhism treat humanity–prioritizing her happiness over his own, the way they’re dedicated to the awakening of all others, even before that of their own. When he truly loves her more than anything else, his spell is broken, just like in the fairy tales, and when he wakes up it’s finally February 3. He’s liberated from an endless February 2, and he’s metaphorically liberated from having to come back. He has found that life is worth living and loving.

Higher Self Healing Meditation

Referral Fees

When I ran my own marketing/PR firm, I loved thanking anyone who referred a new client to me, by sending a check for 10 percent of the fees generated. I have a similar policy as a life coach, a meditation teacher, and the writer of books for others. If you inspire someone to become a client of mine for coaching or book writing, or a meditation student, you’ll receive 10 percent of the fee that that person begins with me at. I’ll be taking time off from March 6-15 for a 10-day vacation in San Miguel de Allende, the wonderful arty town in Mexico. I won’t be responding to phone calls, texts, or emails during that time.

Advanced Meditation Technique Available

The basic course in Higher Self Healing Meditation is easy to learn and even easier to practice; so, too, are advanced techniques, which you can learn, that accelerate your practice. The second technique, for example, expands the benefits of your daily meditation by opening awareness to the most refined levels of inner silence. Think of it as a fertilizer to speed up your growth. This second technique also improves the mind’s ability to cognize thought at more refined levels so that action can be strengthened, increasing your ability to achieve your goals, and thereby grow in fulfillment. This happens naturally and leads to improvements in all areas of life–physical, mental, and spiritual.

The Worth of Words & the Value of Silence

I love when things come full circle. Let me tell you a story about one such example. When I was in college, a favorite class was Romantic poetry. William Wordsworth took my breath away. I’d learned Transcendental Meditation my first semester, and was connecting to the insights of these unacknowledged legislators. With his transcendental experiences and celestial perceptions from childhood, Wordsworth was a poet after my own heart.

Quite recently, Wordsworth came back into my life. A teaching colleague, who was leading a poetry class for a south Florida-based university, asked me to lead the Wordsworth section of his program. I was thrilled to return to the source of so much inspiration. So I introduced the students to a beautiful passage about transcendental experience from “Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey, On Revisiting the Banks of the Wye During a Tour.” This passage nearly floored me when I read it the first time because it sounded as if the late 18th century British poet was somehow describing an experience that I had had in my meditation that morning nearly 200 years later. It floored the students, as well.

                        “Of aspect more sublime; that blessed mood,

In which the burthen of the mystery,

In which the heavy and the weary weights

Of all this unintelligible world

Is lighten’d:–that serene and blessed mood,

In which the affections gently lead us on,

Until, the breath of this corporeal frame,

And even the motion of our human blood

Almost suspended, we are laid asleep

In body, and become a living soul;

While with an eye made quiet by the power

Of harmony, and the deep power of joy,

We see into the life of things.”

When I first read these lines in college, poetry suddenly wasn’t just some lovely ivory tower musings; but rather expressions of my own spiritual experiences. The week before I read Wordsworth’s poem in college, I read an article in Science magazine where a physiologist explained his laboratory findings that meditation creates a state of deep relaxation, with oxygen consumption dropping 16 percent, compared to 8 percent in sleep. He also wrote about how the heart gains deep rest–Wordsworth’s “the blood almost suspended.” The man in the lab coat said that meditation creates a fourth state of consciousness–distinct from waking, dreaming, and sleeping–in which the body is more deeply rested than in sleep, while the mind is even more aware than in waking. Wordsworth said it more beautifully: “we are laid asleep in body and become a living soul.” Finally, science, spirituality, and poetry converged at a single point–what T.S. Eliot called “the still point in the turning world.”

Wordsworth goes on to elaborate in “Tintern Abbey” on the One Spirit that pervades all things, which people, like myself, have experienced in meditation, and he experienced around him in Nature.

“I have felt

A presence that disturbs me with the joy

Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime

Of something far more deeply interfused,

Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns,

And the round ocean, and the living air,

And the blue sky, and in the minds of man,

A motion and a spirit, that impels

All thinking things, all objects of all thought,

And rolls through all things.”

In his greatest poem, “Ode Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood,” the poet says that no matter how stressed you are, at any moment, you can access the timeless realms within, and tune into those peaceful frequencies.

“Hence in a season of calm weather

Though inland far we be,

Our souls have sight of that immortal sea

Which brought us hither,

Can in a moment travel thither,

And see the children sport upon the shore,

And hear the mighty waters rolling evermore.”

So I’ve come full circle: sharing Wordsworth’s exquisite cosmic insights that a professor once shared with me. I hope his writing and my words inspire you to go within to find the “motion and …spirit, that impels/All thinking things, all objects of all thought/And rolls through all things.” As for me, I’m going to go meditate now to find the spirit that rolls through all things.

Your Mind, Your Body, & Your Language

Years ago, I forgave someone who deeply wronged my family and me, and within seven days of that forgiveness I lost seven pounds without changing how I ate or exercised. When, in my “How to be at Peace with Anyone” workshop, I explain the forgiveness method that I teach students, and coach my clients on, I say I can’t be certain of a causal connection between the forgiveness in my heart and the weight loss in my body. Causality implies physical storage of emotional states. Our language, of course, has long told us that there is a strong correlation between mental states and the physical body, as you’ll soon see.

Yogis for millennia say there are seven non-physical centers of energy within the body, ranging from the rectum all the way up to the top of the head. Below is a head-to-toe mind-body language map, in which expressions you use regularly speak to the intimate relationships between what you think and feel and their corresponding connections in your body.

Your Brain

When you have something vital to say to someone you need to give him a “piece of your mind.” If you do, you feel better, having let go of something you were storing in your consciousness, or brain. Did it weigh seven pounds? Most likely not, but perhaps one day a delicate scale will measure the weight of intangible thoughts and feelings.

Your Head

Taxing people and situations give you “a headache.” Relief is available with ibuprofen. My name being Bayer, I prefer a particular aspirin that’s said to work wonders.

Tongue

Sometimes you need to communicate deeply held feelings but get nervous and the words don’t come. People say you’re “tongue-tied,” that your tongue is physically unable to express what your mind wants to say.

Your Neck

Extremely burdensome situations or a difficult person is a real “pain in the neck.” In other words, troubled emotions lodge in your neck.

Your Collar

When you’re very angry you’re “hot under the collar.” Anger has heat, and one day a machine may be able to measure it.

Shoulders

Most of the 300 different massage therapists whom I’ve privately coached say people carry much tension in their shoulders. Micromanagers who think they have to do everything themselves often feel as if they’re “carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders.” Some bodyworkers posit a connection between highly responsible people who often use the word “should” and “should-er” tension.

Your Chest

You have to “get it off your chest,” friends say when there’s something you strongly need to communicate. If not, it festers in your chest, and that can’t be good for your heart. Which leads us to….

Your Heart

Romance novels and epic poetry are full of stories of unrequited love and relationships that crash on the hard rocks of life, leaving delicate people with a “broken heart.”   Such literature is also filled with stories of characters who wind up dying of that broken heart.

Your Guts

Frightened people are accused of having “no guts,” making it virtually impossible for them to act with courage, whereas those who “have the guts,” act courageously by drawing from them.

Your Colon

When you don’t tell the truth, you’re accused of being “full of s-t.” In other words, physical constipation makes it harder to be honest.

Your Stomach

Demanding situations sometimes stress you so deeply you’re “sick to your stomach.”

Your Knees

Fear can make you literally “weak in the knees.”

Feet

Brides and grooms sometimes get such “cold feet” that those feet scamper away from the altar. They might have been weak in the knees, but not too weak to run.

Less localized parts of your body also carry mental states. When you’re angry, your blood “boils,” when you’re terribly frightened your blood “turns cold.” Your bones can be psychic, enabling you to intuit such truth “in your bones.” Arthritis sufferers sometimes predict the rain, which they feel in their bones. Higher Self Healing Meditation

I’m proud to announce the development of a new meditation training that’s been

marinating in the quietest levels of consciousness deep within my soul for a number of years.

Its name is Higher Self Healing Meditation, and it’s as effortless as Transcendental Meditation (TM) that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi trained me to teach when I was 20 years old.

Some years back, the movement that teaches the late Maharishi’s system of TM significantly changed the requirements for those who had been teaching to continue to do so. As a result, thousands of others, including myself, no longer instruct that method. But understanding the mechanics of how the mind transcends in meditation after teaching meditation to so many hundreds of people from southern California and Western Europe to the Caribbean and many points in between–as well as training dozens of teachers of Transcendental Meditation–I’ve developed a system of meditation that’s as effective as TM, as easy as TM, and available at one third the price that it costs to learn TM.

Referral Fees

When I ran my own marketing/PR firm, I loved thanking anyone who referred a new client to me, by sending a check for 10 percent of the fees generated. I have a similar policy as a life coach, a meditation teacher, and the writer of books for others. If you inspire someone to become a client of mine for coaching or book writing, or a meditation student, you’ll receive 10 percent of the fee that that person begins with me at. That could easily mean a check for you of $105 or $65 for coaching, for $50 for meditation, and hundreds of dollars for book publishing. It’s my way of saying, “thanks.”

My thought is simple–who couldn’t use a piece of unexpected income?
