Free Advanced Monthly Meditation Webinar

The advanced meditation webinars, held for those who’ve learned asdfanscendental Meditation or Higher Self Healing Meditation on Thursday nights at 7 PM eastern time, start off with me opening the “floor” to questions about your meditation practice and/or understanding of the path of evolution of consciousness. Then, I’ll do a group meditation check. After that, I’ll direct you to a link for a talk by Maharishi, which each meditator can play on his or her computer. Lastly, I’ll take questions, and lead a discussion about the video.

Research News

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the asdfanscendental Meditation technique is the only meditation practice that has been shown to lower blood pressure. According to the AHA,”Other meditation techniques are not recommended in clinical practice to lower BP at this time.” The AHA scientific statement also reported the finding that lower blood pressure through meditation practice is associated with substantially reduced rates of death, heart attack and sasdfoke.  The AHA scientific statement concludes: “alternative asdfeatments that include the asdfanscendental Meditation technique are recommended for consideration in asdfeatment plans for all individuals with blood pressure.”

Meditation asdfaining Now Available by Skype and Webcam

When I taught asdfanscendental Meditation for several decades, I could only teach it in person.  But since founding Higher Self Healing Meditation in 2010, I’m happy to say that the asdfaining is now available from a distance if you have a webcam on your computer. Focus on the Actions, not the Fruits

“You have the right to work, but never to the fruit of work. You should never engage in action for the sake of reward, nor should you long for inaction. Perform work in this world, Arjuna, as a man established within himself-without selfish attachments, and alike in success and defeat. For yoga is perfect evenness of mind.”-Krishna in Bhagavad-Gita.

Yoga is a lot more than bending and sasdfetching in a class with others twice a week. The lesson from Krishna (above) was driven home deeply to me during a recent one-week teaching tour I took of the Atlantic coast between my two offices–in the Catskill Mountains of New York in legendary Woodstock and the ocean in south Florida.

I arrived in Raleigh, North Carolina at a holistic center that’s repeatedly produced successful classes for me. But on this night, their mailing list was “workshopped out,” as the director put it, and I walked into a surprisingly very small turnout–as in a one solitary soul– very small turnout.

I could have easily cancelled the class-the woman in attendance asked if I wanted to, as did the Center’s director. I could have easily gone to the movies instead, but an inner voice told me to stay. I wasn’t sure why at the time, but I figured it out by the end of the class. 

My lone student learned a great deal in her two-hour private workshop on relationships. A two-hour private coaching session fetches $330; she got hers for a tenth of that. My job was to show up and teach and, as a result, she learned many things that she desperately needed to know.  For that, she thanked me profusely that night, as well as the following day on the phone. I doubt that the guy who cleans up popcorn and gunk from the movie theater’s floors would have been so effusive to me had I gone to the local cineplex.

What I realized ever more deeply that night was that my job is to show up, whether it’s for one person or for one thousand people, as occurred just two weeks later when I delivered the keynote address at a convention in Atlanta. When you’re a meditation teacher and a life coach, you teach meditation and coach. The Universe takes care of the results of those actions. That was a great Life 101 lesson for me.  It’s also a great lesson for you, no matter what you do. Show up and do whatever it is you do.

Oh, and about the Universe taking care of the fruits…the following night, I received an email from a close friend in Ausasdfalia. In it, he invited my wife and me to be guests of his on a two-week Caribbean cruise on a chartered private 192-foot luxury yacht. Since my job is to show up, I’m pretty sure I can show up on a luxury liner even though there will only be a few people, just like I showed up for a class for one.

Meditation is being practiced now in Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Ditto the British Royal Navy and expanding to officers in the Army and Royal Air Force. And the same goes for the New Zealand Defence Force. NATO is to hold a 2-day symposium on meditation.

Article: “Meetings with Enlightened Men”

In honor of our nation’s Independence Day, July 4–ironically the very same day that the writer of the Declaration of Independence left our Earth exactly 50 years later—I present this piece to you. The inspiration came while spending the day at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia home. Spending six months with the great guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi years ago also helped a lot. What follows are parallel observations of Jefferson, whose Declaration of Independence helped enlighten many governments, and Maharishi, whose Transcendental Meditation helped enlighten many people.

Jefferson was influenced by the Age of Enlightenment’s Locke and Voltaire; Maharishi inaugurated the dawning of the Age of Enlightenment in 1973. Both believed strongly in higher education: Jefferson founded and designed the University of Virginia in Charlottesville; Maharishi founded Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, and played a major role in designing the curriculum.

On Happiness

In The Declaration of Independence, Jefferson wrote that people “are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Maharishi wrote, “The purpose of Creation is the expansion of happiness.”

On Serenity

Our third president wrote, “Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances.” The Beatles’ guru said, “The golden gate to peace in life is the experience of bliss, and it is easy for everyone to acquire this great glory and live it throughout life.”

On Consciousness

The political thinker wrote: “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” The spiritual thinker wrote: “Fulfillment is structured in achievement, achievement is structured in action, action is structured in thinking, thinking is structured in knowledge, and knowledge is structured in consciousness.”

On Enlightenment

Our first Secretary of State wrote: “Enlighten the people, generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like spirits at the dawn of day.” Maharishi said, “The goal of the Transcendental Meditation technique is the state of enlightenment. This means we experience that inner calmness, that quiet state of least excitation, even when we are dynamically busy.”

On Government

Our second VP wrote: “My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.” The sage said, “Nature’s government spontaneously brings satisfaction to everyone because it promotes all innumerable, diverse tendencies of life in the evolutionary direction.”

On the Laws of Nature

Jefferson wrote: “A free people [claim] their rights, as derived from the laws of nature, and not as the gift of their chief magistrate.” Maharishi noted: “When the mind is attuned to the cosmic law, all the laws of nature are in perfect harmony with the aspirations of the mind.”

The Spirit of Jefferson

While driving to Monticello, I heard a Unity church recording of a man claiming to channel Jefferson’s spirit. The enlightened words that flowed from this spirit sounded more like what Maharishi said in the 20th century than what Jefferson did in the 18th. Perhaps our President from another age has become an ageless sage.

Higher Self Healing Meditation

I’m proud to announce the development of a new meditation training that’s been marinating in the quietest levels of consciousness deep within my soul for a number of years.

Its name is Higher Self Healing Meditation, and it’s as effortless as Transcendental Meditation (TM) that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi trained me to teach when I was 20 years old.

Leonard Cohen, the great poet singer/songwriter and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, died at the age of 82. Or more aptly, went home, for as he wrote in “Going Home,” one of his most deeply spiritual songs, like most of them akin to koans:

“Going home/Without my burden

Going home/Behind the curtain

Going home/Without the costume

That I wore.”

Leonard Cohen wrote a great deal about the mysteries of love, as well as the mysteries of existence. Born in Montreal to a middle-class Orthodox Jewish family–his paternal grandfather was the founding president of the Canadian Jewish Congress, while his maternal grandfather was a Talmudic writer. “I had a very Messianic childhood,” Cohen said. “I was told I was a descendant of Aaron, the high priest,” he added, referring to Aaron, the brother of Moses. Even while touring, giving concerts, he would observe the Sabbath, eschewing Friday night shows, for example, quite a rarity for performers on the road.

Zen Meditation

But while he was always connected to his religion, he was also deeply drawn to Zen Buddhism, and many of the lyrics to his songs speak to that influence. In 1994, he retreated to the Mt. Baldy Zen Center near Los Angeles, where he would spend the next five years, much of it in seclusion. Two years into his retreat, he was ordained as a Zen Buddhist monk, taking the name Jikan, which translates as silence. It was here that he served as personal assistant to Kyozan Joshu Sasaki, the roshi, or spiritual leader of the center. Cohen said of his spiritual practice that, “Buddhist meditation frees you from God and frees you from religion. You can experience complete at-homeness in this world.”

“Occasionally I’ve felt the grace of another presence in my life,” the poet has written. That other presence seems to speak in “Going Home.” That song, some of whose lyrics are quoted below, is among the most popular songs I play and discuss in my workshop, “Rock ‘n; Roll Yoga: Pop Lyrics, Higher Consciousness & Meditation.”

“I love to speak with Leonard/He’s a sportsman and a shepherd/

…But he does say what I tell him/Even though it isn’t welcome

He just doesn’t have the freedom/To refuse

He will speak these words of wisdom/Like a sage, a man of vision

Though he knows he’s really nothing/But the brief elaboration of a tube

I want him to be certain/That he doesn’t have a burden

That he doesn’t need a vision/That he only has permission

To do my instant bidding/Which is to say what I have told him

To repeat.”

In “Anthem,” he writes of the great Light that virtually all the great spiritual teachers of all time have spoken of at length or written enthusiastically about:

“There is a crack in everything

That’s how the light gets in.”

He speaks of the Buddhist concept of impermanence and detachment in “The Smokey Life:”

“It’s light, light enough

To let it go

It’s light enough to let it go.”

His legendary spiritual song, “Hallelujah,” which has been performed by almost 200 artists in various languages, is probably the work he’s most famous for. Consider the opening two lines, which blend music and spirituality:

“Well I’ve heard there was a secret chord

That David played and it pleased the Lord.”

Later in the song, he writes:

“But remember when I moved in you

And the holy dove was moving too

And every breath we drew was Hallelujah.”

Just a few days after his death, Saturday Night Live, that most irreverent of comedy shows, opened its November 13 broadcast with Kate McKinnon at the piano alone, reverently singing “Hallelujah.” The program could easily have opened with some satire about the Presidential election that had taken place the day after the singer’s passing. McKinnon, after all, had starred in numerous episodes as Hillary Clinton. Instead SNL chose to honor this recipient of the Companion of the Order of Canada, the highest honor his nation bestows.

Advanced Meditation Technique Available

Sometimes the environment we hear something in can make the world of difference with regard to how we react to it. Meditation is no different. Article: “The Reincarnation Film Festival”

There’s the 12-day Cannes Film Festival in France, the 10-day Sundance Film Festival in Utah, and now we need the Reincarnation Film Festival. It should be nine lives long, and held perhaps on the astral plane. (To get tickets and arrange flights perhaps pick up an issue of Astral Travel & Leisure Magazine.)

Jokes aside, a Google search for “Films about Reincarnation” yields 142 pictures (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Films_about_reincarnation). Here’s a clean dozen.

1. Made in Heaven (1987), Alan Rudolph’s fantasy-comedy, stars Timothy Hutton and Kelly McGillis, who meet in the afterlife and fall in love. After she reincarnates he follows to find her in their next lifetime.

2. On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970), the musical comedy drama fantasy, so rich in past lifetimes it cuts across four incarnations. It stars Barbra Streisand and Yves Montand under Vincente Minnelli’s direction, singing Alan Jay Lerner and Burton Lane songs. Montand plays a psychotherapist who uses hypnosis to send his patient (Streisand) back to different lifetimes.

3. Dead Again (1991) Kenneth Branagh in director’s chair works with his wife Emma Thompson, Derek Jacobi, and Robin Williams. The director stars as a detective who helps amnesiac (Thompson) discover her identity through a hypnotherapist. What’s discovered is a previous lifetime in which Thompson was murdered and Branagh was put to death for the crime.

4. What Dreams May Come (1998), stars Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding, Jr. with Vincent Ward as director. In this reincarnation love story, the comedian plays a doctor who dies, and finds himself in Heaven guided by a former medical colleague (Gooding) who is the reincarnation of Williams’s son who died in a car crash. The plot includes a descent to Hell, return to Heaven, and the reincarnation of Chris and his wife who meet in a future lifetime as kids.

5. Cloud Atlas (2012), directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski, stars Halle Berry, Tom Hanks and Susan Sarandon in a complex plot demonstrating how our actions influence others in this life and future ones.

6. Little Buddha (1993), the Bernardo Bertolucci drama starring Keanu Reeves and Bridget Fonda, centers on Tibetan Buddhist monks who search for the reincarnation of a deceased lama.

7. The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975) lensed by J. Lee Thompson, stars Michael Sarrazin and Margot Kidder. A college professor (Sarrazin) has nightmares of a murder, sees sites from the dream in a TV documentary, and goes there and finds the woman in his dreams (Kidder). In time, he discovers he’s the reincarnation of the woman’s husband who was murdered. He marries her daughter, and eventually dies again as he did in that previous lifetime.

8. Goodbye Charlie (1964) comedy stars Tony Curtis and Debbie Reynolds under Vicente Minnelli’s direction once again. Reynolds is the reincarnation of a philandering Hollywood screenwriter named Charlie who was murdered by his paramour’s husband. Proving that writers, like leopards, don’t change their spots; he gets murdered yet again for fooling around yet again—and gets reincarnated as a dog.

9. A Dog’s Purpose (2017), directed by Lasse Hallstrom, who works with several canine actors and Peggy Lipton and Dennis Quaid. A must-see for dog lovers, this delightful film focuses on different canine lifetimes lived by a most devoted soul, whose purpose is to reunite with his human master.

10. The Three Lives of Thomasina (1963) Not to be ouasdfone by reincarnating dogs is this film about a cat who reincarnates twice to live three lives—a third of her feline allotment. Patrick McGoohan stars under Don Chaffey’s direction.

It takes place on a conference line phone call for no more than six people, and it focuses on one topic. THE REINCARNATION FILM FESTIVAL

There’s the 12-day Cannes Film Festival in France, the 10-day Sundance Film Festival in Utah, and now we need the Reincarnation Film Festival. It should be nine lives long, and held perhaps on the astral plane. (To get tickets and arrange flights perhaps pick up an issue of Astral Travel & Leisure Magazine.)

1. Made in Heaven (1987), Alan Rudolph’s fantasy-comedy stars Timothy Hutton and Kelly McGillis, who meet in the afterlife and fall in love. After she reincarnates he follows to find her in their next lifetime.

2. On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970), the musical comedy drama fantasy, so rich in past lifetimes it cuts across four genres. It stars Barbra Streisand and Yves Montand under Vincente Minnelli’s direction, singing Alan Jay Lerner and Burton Lane songs. Montand plays a psychotherapist who uses hypnosis to send his patient (Streisand) back to different lifetimes.

3. Dead Again (1991) Kenneth Branagh in director’s chair works with his wife Emma Thompson, Derek Jacobi, and Robin Williams. The director stars as a detective who helps amnesiac (Thompson) discover her identity through a hypnotherapist. What’s discovered is a previous lifetime in which Thompson was murdered and Branagh was put to death for the crime.

4. What Dreams May Come (1998), stars Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding, Jr. with Vincent Ward as director. In this reincarnation love story, the comedian plays a doctor who dies, and finds himself in Heaven guided by a former medical colleague (Gooding) who is the reincarnation of Williams’s son who died in a car crash. The plot includes a descent to Hell, return to Heaven, and the reincarnation of Chris and his wife who meet in a future lifetime as kids.

5. Cloud Atlas (2012), directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski, stars Halle Berry, Tom Hanks and Susan Sarandon in a complex plot demonstrating how our actions influence others in this life and future ones.

6. Little Buddha (1993), the Bernardo Bertolucci drama starring Keanu Reeves and Bridget Fonda, centers on Tibetan Buddhist monks who search for the reincarnation of a deceased lama.

7. The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975) lensed by J. Lee Thompson, stars Michael Sarrazin and Margot Kidder. A college professor (Sarrazin) has nightmares of a murder, sees sites from the dream in a TV documentary, and goes there and finds the woman in his dreams (Kidder). In time, he discovers he’s the reincarnation of the woman’s husband who was murdered. He marries her daughter, and eventually dies again as he did in that previous lifetime.

Goodbye Charlie (1964) comedy stars Tony Curtis and Debbie Reynolds under Vicente Minnelli’s direction once again. Reynolds is the reincarnation of philandering Hollywood screenwriter named Charlie who was murdered by his paramour’s husband. Proving that writers, like leopards, don’t change their spots; he gets murdered yet again for fooling around yet again—and gets reincarnated as a dog.

9. A Dog’s Purpose (2017), directed by Lasse Hallstrom, who works with several canine actors and Peggy Lipton and Dennis Quaid. A must-see for dog lovers, this delightful film focuses on different canine lifetimes lived by a most devoted soul, whose purpose is to reunite with his human master.

Google has developed a $159 pair of earbuds called Pixel Buds that work with its Pixel smartphones and Google Translate app to create virtually real-time translation of different foreign languages. Article: “The Angels & God Film Festival

I live in south Florida nine months a year, and Woodstock, NY for three, and both areas have recently hosted film festivals, so they’re lively in my consciousness. It’s not surprising that angels, which abound in the history of painting, also similarly light up the history of movies. Even God has shown up in motion pictures over the years, which isn’t surprising because our Judeo-Christian tradition says God set the whole Creation into motion in the first place. Below is by no means an exhaustive list of films with celestial characters. I’d suggest holding the Angels & God Film Festival in Los Angeles–the City of Angels.

Motion pictures in the angels’ category include:

Carousel: The 1956 adaptation of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway musical stars Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in a musical tragedy in which a criminal who dies is given a chance, by his Heavenly guide, to return to Earth for one day to see his daughter graduate high school.

The Bishop’s Wife (1947): features Cary Grant, Loretta Young, and David Niven in a film about an angel who helps a bishop with his many problems.

I Married an Angel (1942): Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy starred in this Rodgers & Hart musical in which soprano Jeanette plays an angel who is more than a match for the count (Eddy) who ignores the secretary who’s infatuated with him.

Angels in the Outfield (1951): stars Paul Douglas as the hard-bitten manager of an inept Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team who’s aided by an angel and his Heavenly Choir Nine of deceased ballplayers. The celestial athletes agree to invisibly help the team if the manager cleans up his speech and his act, which he does, and they do.

Michael (1996): stars John Travolta as a somewhat hedonistic Archangel Michael on a mission to Earth to help heal some broken hearts. The Nora Ephron film depicts him as being quite fond of alcohol and cigarettes.

Angels in America (2003): This 6-hour Mike Nichols film, based on Tony Kushner’s two-part play that won the Tony Award for Best Drama as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It featured an all-star cast of Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, and Emma Thompson, who portrays an angel.

Pictures in the God category feature:

The Ten Commandments (1956): The Cecil B. Demille extravaganza stars Charlton Heston as Moses and Yul Brynner as the Pharaoh, with the hand of God present virtually throughout the nearly four-hour epic film.

Oh God (1977): We’ve come a long way since the depiction of God in The Ten Commandments, with George Burns, a little Jewish man, in the Heavenly role of this Carl Reiner film. Burns played God a second time in a sequel made three years later.

Bruce Almighty (2003): God goes from a Jewish man to an African-American depiction in this movie starring Morgan Freeman as the Almighty and Jim Carrey, as a local TV news reporter, who gets to be God for a week.

Evan Almighty: The 2007 spinoff of the film above stars Steve Carell as a modern-day Noah, told by God (Morgan Freeman again) to build an ark.

Monty Python’s Life of Brian: (1979) This satire from the irreverent British comedy troupe stars Graham Chapman as Brian, a neighbor of Jesus, who overhears his Sermon on the Mount, and who somehow attracts a spiritual following.

Jesus Christ Superstar: (1973) Norman Jewison directed Ted Neeley as Jesus in this Andrew Lloyd Webber musical of the founder of Christianity.

The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc: (1999) The French saint who received visions from God to lead the army of her people against the British is depicted in this inspiring film.

Conversations with God (2006) is a film adaptation of the New York Times’best-selling book that featured the dialogues between Neale Donald Walsch and God.

The Celestine Prophecy (2006) is based on another best-selling book—James Redfield’s eponymous book, which sold more than 23 million copies. It teaches a variety of techniques to connect with God.

Higher Self Healing Meditation

It's called Group Coaching.

It takes place on a conference line phone call for no more than six people, and it focuses on one topic. Each person in the group will get individual coaching on each call, while everyone else listens and profits, having your issues repeatedly brought up by other people because we stay focused on the topic of improving how you communicate, be it with your significant other, your parents, kids, siblings, friends, bosses, co-workers, clients, neighbors, and so forth. The basic course in Higher Self Healing Meditation is easy to learn and even easier to practice; so, too, are advanced techniques, which you can learn, that accelerate your practice. Living Room Lectures

Sometimes the environment we hear something in can make the world of difference with regard to how we react to it. Meditation is no different. Toward that end, I enjoy giving free talks on meditation in the living rooms of meditators. Article: "The Angels & God Film Festival"

I live in south Florida nine months a year, and Woodstock, NY for three, and both areas have recently hosted film festivals, so they're lively in my consciousness. It's not surprising that angels, which abound in the history of painting, also similarly light up the history of movies. Even God has shown up in motion pictures over the years, which isn't surprising because our Judeo-Christian tradition says God set the whole Creation into motion in the first place. Below is by no means an exhaustive list of film with celestial characters. I'd suggest holding the Angels & God Films Festival in Los Angeles–the City of Angels.

Motion pictures in the angels' category include:

Carousel: The 1956 adaptation of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway musical stars Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in a musical tragedy in which a criminal who dies is given a chance, by his Heavenly guide, to return to Earth for one day to see his daughter graduate high school.

The Bishop's Wife (1947): features Cary Grant, Loretta Young, and David Niven in a film about an angel who helps a bishop with his many problems.

I Married an Angel (1942): Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy starred in this Rodgers & Hart musical in which soprano Jeanette plays an angel who is more than a match for the count (Eddy) who ignores the secretary who's infatuated with him.

Angels in the Outfield (1951): stars Paul Douglas as the hard-bitten manager of an inept Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team who's aided by an angel and his Heavenly Choir Nine of deceased ballplayers. The celestial athletes agree to invisibly help the team if the manager cleans up his speech and his act, which he does, and they do.

Michael (1996): stars John Travolta as a somewhat hedonistic Archangel Michael on a mission to Earth to help heal some broken hearts. The Nora Ephron film depicts him as being quite fond of alcohol and cigarettes.

Angels in America (2003): This 6-hour Mike Nichols film is based on Tony Kushner's two-part play that won the Tony Award for Best Drama as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It featured an all-star cast of Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, and Emma Thompson, who portrays an angel.

Pictures in the God category feature:

The Ten Commandments (1956): The Cecil B. Demille extravaganza stars Charlton Heston as Moses and Yul Brynner as the Pharaoh, with the hand of God present virtually throughout the nearly four-hour epic film.

Oh God (1977): We've come a long way since the depiction of God in The Ten Commandments, with George Burns, a little Jewish man, in the Heavenly role of this Carl Reiner film. Burns played God a second time in a sequel made three years later.

Bruce Almighty (2003): God goes from a Jewish to an African-American depiction in this movie starring Morgan Freeman as the Almighty and Jim Carrey, as a local TV news reporter, who gets to be God for a week.

Evan Almighty: The 2007 spinoff of the film above stars Steve Carell as a modern-day Noah, told by God (Morgan Freeman again) to build an ark.

Monty Python's Life of Brian: (1979) This satire from the irreverent British comedy troupe stars Graham Chapman as Brian, a neighbor of Jesus, who overhears his Sermon on the Mount, and who somehow attracts a spiritual following.

Jesus Christ Superstar: (1973) Norman Jewison directed Ted Neeley as Jesus in this Andrew Lloyd Webber musical of the founder of Christianity.

The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc: (1999) The French saint who received visions from God to lead the army of her people against the British is depicted in this inspiring film.

Conversations with God (2006) is a film adaptation of the New York Times' best-selling book that featured the dialogues between Neale Donald Walsch and God.

The Celestine Prophecy (2006) is based on another best-selling book—James Redfield's eponymous book, which sold more than 23 million copies. It teaches a variety of techniques to connect with God.

Article: “Hermann Hesse & Your Journey To the Eastern Part of Here and Now”

Today I spontaneously said, “I can think, I can wait, I can fast,” echoing Siddhartha in Hermann Hesse’s eponymous 1922 novel. The book readied me for the journey to the East, which I started at 17 with an Indian guru named Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. I was being prepared for it the year before by two catalysts: the Moody Blues, a British rock band, and Hesse, the German Romantic novelist.

From 1919 through 1943, he wrote six novels that helped lead young people to the spiritual path, a champion among meditators and psychedelic adventurers. As Timothy Leary wrote, “Hesse is the master guide to the psychedelic experience.” He also enlightened readers about psychological projection in Demian (1919), writing, “If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself. What isn’t part of ourselves doesn’t disturb us.”

Trust Your Self

In Demian, he invited us to trust the inner voice:

“I have ceased to question stars and books; I have begun to listen to the teaching my blood whispers to me.”

“I wanted only to live in accord with the promptings which came from my true self.”

In Siddhartha, too:

“A seeker after truth cannot accept any doctrine, not if he truly wishes to find. One who has found, however—he can approve of every doctrine.”

Unique Individual

Writing during both world wars when individual dignity was ignored, he called for the uniqueness of each person:

“Every man is more than just himself; he also represents the unique, the very special and always significant and remarkable point at which the world’s phenomena intersect, only once in this way, and never again. That is why every man’s story is important, eternal, sacred; that is why every man, as long as he lives and fulfills the will of nature, is wondrous, and worthy of consideration. In each individual the spirit has become flesh, in each man the creation suffers, within each one a redeemer is nailed to the cross.”

Spiritual Metaphors

His Journey to the East (1932) was “not only a country and a geographical location but rather the homeland of the soul’s youth, the everywhere and nowhere, the oneness of all times.” The Glass Bead Game (1943), for which he won his Nobel Prize, was “the sum total of everything spiritual and artistic.” In it, he wrote of the peace that comes through spiritual mastery:

Transcendence, Detachment & Laughter

In Steppenwolf (1927) protagonist Harry Haller learned, in the Magic Theater, the freedom that comes with letting go, detachment, and laughter:

“…this music was something like time frozen to space, and above it hovered a superhuman serenity, an eternal, divine laughter.”

The inner journeyer of a writer elsewhere wrote:

He understood the spiritual detachment of the East, what St. Paul called “being in the world, but not of it.” He wrote: “Some of us think holding on makes us strong but sometimes it is letting go.” Hesse knew that, while the spiritual seeker is serious, the spiritual finder comes face to face with the laughter of the cosmos: “Learn what is to be taken seriously and laugh at the rest.” Spiritual insight meant living from the freedom of Eternity within each moment in time:

What’s the Under-Employment Index?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics keeps a monthly tab on the unemployment rate. This number—approximately 4.1 percent in March of 2018—gives a thumbnail look at how many people aren’t working in America. This index, treating people as statistics, measures their financial cost for not having regular paychecks. What this quantitative measurement fails to measure, however, is the qualitative statistic I call under-employment. There’s no way to measure how 96 percent of the working population suffer for being under-employed.

If a musical composer in Woodstock, New York—and I know plenty of them—works as a handyman or contractor instead of as a composer, he’s under-employed. He’s using circular saws instead of pianos. Thus, he’s giving society a wooden bookcase that he makes with his hands instead of the song or the musical that he’s writing in his head in the limited spare time that contracting affords him. The loss is to him and to us. He suffers emotionally, and we suffer for getting less than what he’s here to offer.

Actresses in Hollywood who wait tables aren’t giving the world their best. There may be a Meryl Streep among them. Instead of giving possible Academy Award-winning performances in movies, she’s bringing customers today’s blue plate special in diners or mustard-crusted branzino in bistros.

Writers in New York working as proofreaders in law firms may lack the time or energy to write the next Death of a Salesman or Catcher in the Rye after long days or nights catching typos on lawsuits. I’ve known many of these people in my time.

This isn’t new. Paul Gaugain was a stockbroker. Walt Whitman toiled in the Patent office. Dracula creator Bram Stoker managed a theater. T.S. Eliot worked at Lloyds Bank in London while writing The Wasteland. Wallace Stevens was an insurance attorney for the Hartford. William Carlos Williams was a medical doctor. Kurt Vonnegut managed a Saab dealership. Philip Glass drove a cab and did plumbing. Composer Charles Ives co-founded Ives & Myrick Insurance. Jeff Koons was a Wall Street commodities broker. It’s a phenomenon that would be great to retire.

Colleges and universities train people for jobs, often in a terrific manner—at least many do. We need steady streams of new engineers, computer scientists, and medical doctors. And the MITs, Stanfords, and Yale Medical Schools of the world are there to train such people for such employment. What we really need, in addition, are entrepreneurial schools that train composers to make a living as composers, actors to provide for themselves as actors, writers who write successfully for a living so that they can also write checks for their mortgages that won’t bounce.

There are institutions like the Julliard School in New York City to train creative people for the arts. There’s the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, and the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco to train actors, among such reputable centers. But because actors, writers, singers, and dancers are filled with creative ideas they often aren’t very good at marketing these ideas, and so these training centers need to simultaneously train their charges in basic business and marketing skills, as well, so they can work professionally in the arts and not be hyphenates like the actresses-waitresses and composer-carpenters discussed above.

Woodstock, New York, where I have lived for nearly 30 years, is a town filled with hyphenates. It has long attracted artists of all stripes, but because artists—and healers and spiritual folk, as well—are right-brained oriented, they’re not usually strong in the left-brained talents of doing business. What we really need, therefore, are Entrepreneurial Institutions that focus on creative people. This would enable

millions of gifted people to be sharing the talents they’ve been given and be fully supporting themselves in the process. This would lower the Under-Employment Index significantly, make them so much happier, give the society we live in the very best they have to offer, and put a smile on the face of the Great Spirit that has gifted all of these people so lovingly.

Higher Self Healing Meditation

I’m proud to announce the development of a new meditation training that’s been marinating in the quietest levels of consciousness deep within my soul for a number of years.

Its name is Higher Self Healing Meditation, and it’s as effortless as Transcendental Meditation (TM) that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi trained me to teach when I was 20 years old.

Some years back, the movement that teaches the late Maharishi’s system of TM significantly changed the requirements for those who had been teaching to continue to do so. Referral Fees

When I ran my own marketing/PR firm, I loved thanking anyone who referred a new client to me, by sending a check for 10 percent of the fees generated. I have a similar policy as a life coach, a meditation teacher, and the writer of books for others. If you inspire someone to become a client of mine for coaching or book writing, or a meditation student, you’ll receive 10 percent of the fee that that person begins with me at. That could easily mean a check for you of $105 or $65 for coaching, for $50 for meditation, and hundreds of dollars for book publishing. It’s my way of saying, “thanks.”

My thought is simple–who couldn’t use a piece of unexpected income?
