Column: “GOD & PLANS & BEARS (OH MY!)”

 

        When your name is Bayer and you reach puberty before all the other kids and have a great deal more hair than them, your nickname quickly becomes “The Bear.”  I was reminded of my bear karma one day outside my home in Woodstock, N. Y. I was also reminded of the quip over my desk: “If you want to make God laugh, talk about your plans.” 

        My plans were to go to the post office for the weekly shipments of my books, tapes and booklets to bookstores and individuals. I had 30 minutes between coaching sessions, enough time, according to my carefully-designed plans. Until a bear print stepped into my date book.

        During the night, my trash cans, intended for sanitation pickup, were confiscated by a bear. (A holiday the day before moved the schedule back a day, to the two-legged Bear’s surprise and the four-legged bear’s delight.)  About to turn out of my driveway, I spotted my trash in the middle of the country road blocking both traffic and my trip to town. I followed the trail, and discovered the answer to the koan: why did the bear cross the road? To eat my garbage.  As I started putting his leftovers into a new bag, I chuckled because I knew God was laughing about my plan. The bear might have been laughing, too, had he not been busy digesting leftover lunches and credit card offers from American Express.

        So there I was, rifling through garbage on the property of Levon Helm, drummer of the great 60’s rockers, The Band, who played at the Woodstock Festival which, as a youth, I feasted on. I looked like A.J. Weberman, the infamous “garbologist” who poured through Bob Dylan’s trash to discover—who knows?–his preference in milk and cookies. (Seinfeld-like connections dawned: the Band was Dylan’s back-up before they became stars, and Dylan’s former manager once owned property in the next town–Bearsville.) 

        So when you take a peek at your schedule, make certain there’s room in between things on your to-do list. God and bears have a way of laughing at your plans.

Referral Fees

When I ran my own marketing/PR firm, I loved thanking anyone who referred a new client to me, by sending a check for 10 percent of the fees generated. I have a similar policy as a life coach, a meditation teacher, and the writer of books for others. If you inspire someone to become a client of mine for coaching or book writing, or a meditation student, you’ll receive 10 percent of the fee that that person begins with me at. That could easily mean a check for you of $140 or $85 for coaching, and for $50 for meditation. It’s my way of saying, “thanks.” My thought is simple–who couldn’t use a piece of unexpected income?

Column: “The Angels & God Film Festival

 

         I live in south Florida nine months a year, and Woodstock, NY for three, and both areas have recently hosted film festivals, so they’re lively in my consciousness. It’s not surprising that angels, which abound in the history of painting, also similarly light up the history of movies. Even God has shown up in motion pictures over the years, which isn’t surprising because our Judeo-Christian tradition says God set the whole Creation into motion in the first place. Below is by no exhaustive list of films with celestial characters. I’d suggest holding the Angels & God Films Festival in Los Angeles–the City of Angels.

         Motion pictures in the angels’ category include:

         Carousel: The 1956 adaptation of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway musical stars Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in a musical tragedy in which a criminal who dies is given a chance, by his Heavenly guide, to return to Earth for one day to see his daughter graduate high school.

          The Bishop’s Wife (1947): features Cary Grant, Loretta Young, and David Niven in a film about an angel who helps a bishop with his many problems.

           I Married an Angel (1942): Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy starred in this Rodgers & Hart musical in which soprano Jeanette plays an angel who is more than a match for the count (Eddy) who ignores the secretary who’s infatuated with him.

            Angels in the Outfield (1951): stars Paul Douglas as the hard-bitten manager of an inept Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team who’s aided by an angel and his Heavenly Choir Nine of deceased ballplayers. The celestial athletes agree to invisibly help the team if the manager cleans up his speech and his act, which he does, and they do.

            Michael (1996): stars John Travolta as a somewhat hedonistic Archangel Michael on a mission to Earth to help heal some broken hearts. The Nora Ephron film depicts him as being quite fond of alcohol and cigarettes.

            Angels in America (2003): This 6-hour Mike Nichols film, based on Tony Kushner’s two-play that won the Tony Award for Best Drama as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It featured an all-star cast of Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, and Emma Thompson, who portrays an angel.

           Pictures in the God category feature:

           The Ten Commandments (1956): The Cecil B. Demille extravaganza stars Charlton Heston as Moses and Yul Brynner as the Pharaoh, with the hand of God present virtually throughout the nearly four-hour epic film.

            Oh God (1977): We’ve come a long way since the depiction of God in The Ten Commandments, with George Burns, a little Jewish man, in the Heavenly role of this Carl Reiner film. Burns played God a second time in a sequel made three years later.

            Bruce Almighty (2003): God goes from a Jewish to an African- American depiction in this movie starring Morgan Freeman as the Almighty and Jim Carrey, as a local TV news reporter, who gets to be God for a week.

             Evan Almighty: The 2007 spinoff of the film above stars Steve Carell as a modern-day Noah, told by God (Morgan Freeman again) to build an ark.

             Monty Python’s Life of Brian: (1979) This satire from the irreverent British comedy troupe stars Graham Chapman as Brian, a neighbor of Jesus, and who overhears his Sermon on the Mount, who somehow attracts a spiritual following.

              Jesus Christ Superstar: (1973) Norman Jewison directed Ted Neeley as Jesus in this Andrew Lloyd Webber musical of the founder of Christianity.

             The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc: (1999) The French saint who received visions from God to lead the army of her people against the British is depicted in this inspiring film.

           Conversations with God (2006) is a film adaptation of the New York Times’ best-selling book that featured the dialogues between Neale Donald Walsch and God.

           The Celestine Prophecy (2006) is based on another best-selling book—James Redfield’s eponymous book, which sold more than 23 million copies. It teaches a variety of techniques to connect with God.

Article: “Actors & the Infinite Field of Creativity Within”

                      When I watch the Oscars presentation, it seems like the stars are treated like Olympian gods and goddesses. Stars, after all, are, lights in the heavens, so the Olympian reference seems apt. We lionize actors because they perform valuable services. On the obvious level, their art lifts our spirits, opens our minds, and warms our hearts. More subtly, they sometimes portray heroes who embody life lived from full potential. They put their egos aside so their characters can take over. The very best channel many different kinds of characters from their center. We delight in watching such channeling because we yearn to find that center in ourselves, which can open vast creativity.

                      A Transcendental Meditation teacher for decades, and now founder of Higher Self Healing Meditation launched in 2010, I’ve given many hundreds of people the experience of that center, the higher Self within. This is a pure field of creative intelligence, a source of limitless creativity that can manifest as acting, music, art, or less “arty” fields, like gardening, managing, and virtually any human activity. True genius actors draw from within themselves a wide range of characters; I’m thinking of Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman, rather than Sylvester Stallone, who’s often played the same character.

Meryl, Dustin & the Cosmic Role of Actors

           Meryl Streep’s oeuvre is remarkable for how many different characters have lived inside her. Perhaps the highest role she plays each time she plays a role is that she reminds us that we, too, play roles. As the transcendental Being in us manifests as human, the Universal becomes an individual. Your Being plays roles as whatever you do in the world. As Teilhard de Chardin put it, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, but spiritual beings having a human experience.”  

           Meryl Streep has portrayed with pitch-perfect accuracy accents that were Polish (Sophie’s Choice), Danish (Out of Africa), Italian (The Bridges of Madison County), British (Iron Lady), Irish (Dancing at Lughnasa), Australian (A Cry in the Dark), and Chilean (The House of the Spirits), as well as American accents from the South, Midwest, and New York. She’s played women who are straight, gay, dying, even dead. That she’s won only three Oscars, while passed over the sixteen other times she was nominated, is a mystery to me.

           Dustin Hoffman has played a transvestite (Tootsie) autistic savant (Rain Man), street hustler (Midnight Cowboy), 120-year-old raised by Native Americans (Little Big Man), grotesque criminal (Dick Tracy), and pirate (Hook), to name just a handful.

           Naturally, Streep and Hoffman are separate from their varied roles, like your inner Self, because it’s transcendental, is separate from your body, perceptions, thoughts, feelings, and personality. Like actors who play many roles, so do you: spouse, parent, child, sibling, employee, client, rep, etc. More cosmically, as expressed in the Bhagavad Gita, the textbook of Yoga, the actor, remaining detached from the roles that he plays, is like your higher Self, which, remaining detached, has played the role of many individuals through your soul’s many lifetimes. This lifetime it’s been you, in a past life someone else, in a future one, assuming you don’t realize your higher in this lifetime, someone else. In the Gita, Krishna, the teacher, tells his student, “As a man casting off worn-out garments takes other new ones, so the dweller in the body casting off worn-out bodies takes others that are new.” (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi translation) 

           The actor detaches from who he is to let another being live through him. When you realize your true nature, you let another being live through you; not a new character but who you’ve always been. You’ll see that your personality is really a role, just like Clark Kent is a role Superman plays.

                      So to paraphrase the Wizard of Oz, “Pay less attention to the actor behind the dropping curtain.” Not because he’s a fraud, like the wizard, but because he represents the infinite creativity within yourself. While he might not invie you to play Hamlet, Stanley Kowalski, or Groucho’s Rufus T. Firefly, he quietly invites you to connect to the silent, yet infinitely creative source within yourself through meditation.”

Column: Prosperity & the Bible

 

        Recently, a new coaching client confessed that to her money and spirit are like oil and water. The issue she raised confuses many spiritual seekers. There are references in the Bible that form the basis of our consciousness with regard to prosperity.

        Did you know that the original temple in Jerusalem was built on 35 acres of land? The gates were made of gold and silver, and the blocks were marble. This wasn’t the workmanship of an ambitious Hebraic Frank Lloyd Wright, but the exact specifications of the invisible Architect of Creation, which wanted a prosperous house of worship for mankind.

God also wanted the original priests to be millionaires, so they’d have no monetary distractions to prevent them from advancing the spiritual enlightenment of themselves and their congregations. He wanted them dressing elegantly, wearing “garments for glory and beauty,” including linen, and emeralds & diamonds.

        Biblical patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob have much to teach about prosperity. Abraham was blessed with an abundance of cattle, silver and gold. His son Isaac had the Midas touch, sowing “in the land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him, and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy. He had possessions of flocks and herds and a great household.” His son Jacob “grew exceedingly rich and had much cattle, maidservants, manservants, camels, asses.” Joseph, Jacob’s youngest son, became the second most powerful man in Egypt because of his spiritual gift for interpreting dreams. It’s no wonder Sir Francis Bacon said: “Prosperity is the blessing of the Old Testament.” Christ made prosperity the blessing of the New Testament too, when he said: “I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.”

        With God’s help, Moses taught that the source of supply was not the Egyptians but God, who freed them from slavery and led them to a Promised Land of abundance, through the aid of countless miracles, including manna from Heaven.

        Christ said it doesn’t profit a man to gain the world if he loses his soul. On the other hand, it’s blissful to gain your soul and the world. It’s 200 percent of life—100 percent inner spiritual and 100 percent outer material. It’s mastering abundance–physically and metaphysically.

        Jesus showed his disciples where to cast their nets for an abundant catch of fish, and kept guests celebrating at a wedding party by turning water into wine. He never dwelled on lack, having mastered dwelling on Divine abundance. He didn’t put down wealth, per se, but showed that it paled in comparison to the treasures of the Kingdom of Heaven, which never rusted or changed. Earthly jewels and gold are toys compared to spiritual riches.

        Christ said, seek the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all else shall be added unto you. The abundant miracles he performed were also performed by his disciples, and perhaps by you as well; for he added, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do.”

        Buckminster Fuller said there are enough resources on Earth for everyone to live like a millionaire. So why the guilt? God, the Creator, is infinite; Man and Woman, His creations, have infinite souls made in that Divine image; and there’s a vast creation with resources enough for us all to live like millionaires.

Sometimes the environment we hear something in can make the world of difference with regard to how we react to it. Meditation is no different. ARTICLE: MEDITATION & SLEEP

       Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who first taught me how to teach meditation, knew he wasn’t in Kansas anymore—to say nothing of the Himalayas, for that matter—when Americans asked him early on in his teaching if the Transcendental Meditation technique could help them sleep at night. Maybe he knew that he was in Kansas, because he certainly wasn’t asked such questions in India.

      Unlike medication, meditation can help treat sleeplessness with remarkable effectiveness. As someone who practiced Transcendental Meditation from the age of 17 until 2010 and who taught it for several decades until launching Higher Self Healing Meditation in 2010, I can speak from extensive personal experience, and from my experience with hundreds of students, that people with sleeping difficulties should seriously consider learning how to meditate.

     Practiced twice a day in the morning and early evening for 20 minutes at a time, meditation serves as a preparation for activity, and gives the body more energy. But when sleeplessness keeps a person tossing and turning and counting more sheep than shepherds, meditation serves to put that person to sleep very shortly. Why do Transcendental Meditation and my Higher Self Healing Meditation help get a sleepless person to sleep–or back to sleep in the middle of the night–within 20 minutes when, during the day, it gives him more energy? The answer is that meditation gives the body what it most needs at the time. During the day the body needs energy; late at night when it needs to repair itself from the fatigue and stress of the day through sleep, the body needs to rest. Meditation is a natural method without side effects to give the body what it needs when it needs it.

      Sleep, by giving the body eight hours of rest during the night, is Nature’s way of helping the body throw off fatigue and replenish itself for the following day. During the deepest point in a night’s sleep, the amount of oxygen consumed drops by some 8 percent, as measured by physiologists Drs. R.K. Wallace and Herbert Benson in 1972 in a study on Transcendental Meditation published in Scientific American. Interestingly, that same study found that the meditation method they studied enabled the body to require 16 percent less oxygen; in other words the body was gaining a level of rest that was twice as deep as the deepest point in a night’s sleep. Sleep is Nature’s gift that allows us to release the day’s fatigue; meditation is Nature’s gift that allows us to release much deeper-rooted stresses and tensions. Combining both these tools enables us to live a happier, more rested life—sleeping when we need to sleep, and being awake when we need to be awake.

Column: Happy Birthday and Happy Berthday

 

        May has always been my favorite month: Perhaps for the flowers April’s showers bring, perhaps for how it epitomizes the rebirth of spring, or perhaps because of the presents it brings. Presents, you ask? May, you see, is the month I was born. A quintessential Gemini twin, I entered the world on the day of double 2s. 

           Birthdays are a celebration of entry onto the physical plane. I’ve taken mine off from work every year since 1984 when I became self-employed. This year, I celebrated with a beautiful hour and a half massage—thanks, Holly Green—as well as a delicious sushi buffet feast, followed by a romantic walk by the Atlantic Ocean with my wife. 

The anniversary of the day you entered our world is a day when people you haven’t seen or heard from in a while send cards and call to wish you a happy day. Some send presents or take you to dinner; some even throw you a surprise party. It’s a day when you’re treated extra nicely by others, and, hopefully by yourself. It’s a day of being cut extra slack, of being given a wider berth.  Perhaps we should call this sacred day a berth day.

           If we treat ourselves really well, and let others do the same for one day a year—letting one and all cut us a wider berth–we can let others and ourselves treat us really well every day of the year. Wow…imagine that! This wider berth is the real “Life 101” lesson of the day we call birthday.

           How would you like to celebrate your birthday this year? Why not call in well that day? Maybe you could call your significant other in to massage you? How about breakfast in bed? When was the last time you had that? How about making love? (I won’t ask when was the last time you did that.) Or maybe brunch out somewhere special; remember, you’re playing hooky, so enjoy yourself. Would you like a day of pampering at a day spa? How about a delicious dinner in your favorite restaurant? Perhaps you’d enjoy popping the cork on your favorite champagne to celebrate you.

Take half a minute to flesh out the rest of this special day of celebration of you and your life. After you’ve visualized your ideal day, take a minute to write a list of 10 favorite pleasures. How many of these pleasures were included in your ideal birthday celebration?  If there were many, fabulous: you’re well on your way to building high self-esteem. If there weren’t many, start cutting yourself a much wider berth, and love yourself a whole lot more. What can you start doing today to make your life be filled with the things that bring you happiness and joy? 

On your birthday—cancel/clear…make that, berthday—people will forgive your faux pas of forgetting social amenities because they’ll allow you to celebrate yourself on this one day a year. What can you do to start cutting yourself and others a much wider berth? Alexander Pope, the poet, wrote, “To err is human, to forgive, divine.” Start forgiving yourself and others on a daily basis by cutting them a wider berth, and the 364 days each year that are not your birthday will turn out to be much happier than the way you typically spend your birthday now.

Referral Fees

When I ran my own marketing/PR firm, I loved thanking anyone who referred a new client to me, by sending a check for 10 percent of the fees generated. I have a similar policy as a life coach, a meditation teacher, and the writer of books for others. If you inspire someone to become a client of mine for coaching or book writing, or a meditation student, you’ll receive 10 percent of the fee that that person begins with me at.  Free Advanced Monthly Meditation Webinar

Living Room Lectures

Sometimes the environment we hear something in can make the world of difference with regard to how we react to it. Meditation is no different. ARTICLE: Wise Guy/Wise Man Jim Carrey

         With June here and graduations everywhere, below are excerpts from one of the most enlightening graduation addresses I’ve heard. It was Jim Carrey’s at Maharishi University of Management. Having received my Masters degree from this bastion of higher learning that awakens your higher Self, I proudly share its highlights. Below is a link to the entire video and its transcription.

           The comedian/mystic says:

           “I thought Jim Carrey is all that I was… The great nothing masquerading as something you can name. You didn’t think I could be serious did ya’? I don’t think you understand who you’re dealing with! I have no limits! I cannot be contained because I’m the container.”

 

           He then fuses spirituality with laughter:

           “I believed I ended at the edge of my skin…(in) this little vehicle called a body to experience creation, and though I couldn’t have asked for a sportier model, it was after all a loaner and would have to be returned.”

 

           Those familiar with affirmations recognize Carrey’s seriousness and comedy:

           “Many people choose their path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect, so we dare not ask the universe for it…I’m proof you can ask for it!…If it doesn’t happen right away, it’s because the universe is busy fulfilling my order. It’s party size!”

 

           He discourages livelihoods to tolerate for lovelihoods to adore.

           “My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that was possible…Instead, he (became) an accountant. (until) he was let go from that safe job…I learned great lessons from him…that you can fail at what you don’t want, so take a chance doing what you love…I watched the affect his love and humor had on the world, and I thought, ‘That’s something…worth my time.’”

 

           Here’s a portrait of the comic as a young boy…

           “People would come to my house and they’d be greeted by a 7 year-old throwing himself down a flight of stairs. They’d say, ‘What happened?’ And I’d say, ‘I don’t know — let’s check the replay.’ And I’d go back to the top and come back down in slow motion.”

 

           …and young man:

           “My father bragged that I wasn’t a ham — I was the whole pig. He treated my talent as his second chance…After a decade as a comedian, I realized…. the purpose of my life had always been to free people from concern…I dubbed my new devotion, The Church of Freedom From Concern—and dedicated myself to that ministry.”

 

           Doing his dharma (calling) helped Carrey command eight-figure deals, but then there’s spirituality…

           “My choosing to free people from concern got me to the top of a mountain. … (but) the only one I hadn’t freed was myself and that’s when my search for identity deepened.”

 

           He applauds those who’ve applauded him.

           “But you…already know who you are and that peace that we’re after, lies beyond personality… Risk being seen in all your glory…You’re not the pictures on the film stock, you’re the light that shines through it.”

 

           He encourages tapping the Source of success.

           “If people could realize their dreams of wealth and fame they’d see that it’s not completion…I went into the world to do something bigger than myself, until someone smarter than myself made me realize there is nothing bigger than myself!”

 

           The comic/mystic speaks:

           “My soul is not contained within the limits of my body. My body is contained within the limitlessness of my soul —one unified field of nothing dancing for no particular reason, except maybe to…entertain itself.”

 

           Then addresses your ego which,

           “will tell you that you cannot stop until you’ve left an indelible mark on the earth, until you’ve achieved immortality. How tricky is the ego that it would tempt us with the promise of something we already possess.”

           

           The minister who teaches freedom from concern concludes:

           “I just want you to relax—that’s my job—and dream up a good life! It’s about letting the universe know what you want and working toward it while letting go of how it might come to pass. Your job is not to figure out how it’s going to happen, but to open the door in your head and when the doors open in real life, just walk through….You’re ready and able to do beautiful things in this world.”
